Southern Singletrack Trail Series: Chewacla Cha Cha Preview

With two races complete, the Southern Singletrack Trail Series is beginning to take shape. competitors have battled through the early season at West Point Break and Bucky’s BTPR, and now all eyes turn to Chewacla State Park for race three — the Chewacla Cha Cha.
This race is often a turning point in the series. The standings are still tight, and Chewacla’s rolling singletrack has a way of rewarding consistency while punishing any lapse in focus. Here’s how things stand going into the weekend.
Short Series
Men’s Division
  • Ben Crockett has established himself as the early leader with strong runs in both races.
  • Chuck Rudd and Michael Spicer remain well within striking distance, and Chewacla could be their chance to close the gap.
This division is competitive, and one strong performance could quickly change the order.
Women’s Division
  • Stephanie James opened her season with a solid performance at West Point, but with only one finish recorded, her full potential in the standings is still developing.
  • Lisa Hettinger and Karin Hurley are close behind, and both have the opportunity to make a move in Auburn.
The women’s short series remains wide open, with several athletes capable of breaking through.
Long Series
Men’s Division
  • Benji Mitchum leads the way, showing consistency across the opening races.
  • Bobby Poer, John Coleman, and Sam Andrews are all close enough to challenge with a strong result at Chewacla.
The long course favors steady pacing and endurance, which means any one of these athletes could rise in the standings this weekend.
Women’s Division
  • Meghan Kennedy currently holds the advantage, but she faces determined competition.
  • Elisabeth Arthur and Emily Purcell are both within range, and Chewacla offers the kind of course where standings can shift significantly.
Expect this race to provide more clarity in the long series women’s battle.
Looking Ahead
The Chewacla Cha Cha offers a course that is both scenic and challenging. Its singletrack flows through rolling terrain, demanding not only speed but also focus and efficiency. With the series still in its early stages, this third race could play a decisive role in shaping the path toward the overall titles.
Runners who excel here will not only earn valuable points but also set the tone for the second half of the season.
